Style Classic: The leather jacket

Beautiful woman in a leather jacket

Hello readers,

In fashion, there are some attire which have been around for many years and have been classed as classics. My personal favourite is the LBD (little black dress). These classics are a staple to any fashionista’s wardrobe.

The leather jacket is most definitely one of them and this item of clothing is so versatile. You can pair it with many different outfits no matter what your style is.

The leather jacket didn’t start out on the catwalk. It started out as a piece of protective clothing for the military. Aviator pilots during the Second World War would wear them over their overalls to help combat the extremely cold weather conditions they had to put up with at high altitude.

The leather jacket became very popular in 1940’s and 50’s Hollywood. Hollywood stars were seen wearing them onscreen and were very popular for action hero’s’ and the renegade bad boys like Elvis (in his early career) or James Dean. They became the iconic symbol for the ‘greaser’ culture of the late 1950 ’s, who normally rode a motorcycle with the leather jacket that helped to keep them from harm if they ever fell of their bike. Leather is still used for bike safety clothing today but this is a very different type of leather. As it is a lot thicker and more substantial than the leather used in fashion.

Rock stars during the 1970’s and 1980’s loved the black leather jacket and their fans loved to copy them and it became such and iconic symbol of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The likes of Joan Jett, Freddie Mercury, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, the Ramones and many more.

Punk rock became big in the 80’s. The iconic punk style was big and colourful hair, leather from top to bottom paired with plaid shirt or trousers, covered with studs and other metal accessories. Micheal Jacksons red and black leather jacket from his Thriller video became a big style craze that everyone wanted to copy. As well as Madonna’s iconic style which was copied by many teenagers and young adults throughout this decade.

In the 90’s the jackets became fitted and the material used to create the jacket had a more glossy look to it than it had done before. Rappers of the 90’s and 00’s wore big and baggy jackets. Women’s jackets came in a couple of styles, one was a very traditional rocker look and the other was a styled, fitted looking like a shorter trench coat.

The leather jacket has been so versatile over the years since it was first used during the Second World War for aviator pilots. The jacket has been cut into many different shapes, styles and colours but always seems fresh and new.

Every woman needs a leather jacket in her wardrobe. It is a style classic that has been around for many years and it will stay in style for many years to come.
