The top 20 designers of all time (according to me)

Here is a list of the top 20 fashion designers if all time (according to me anyway). Sit back and enjoy the list and see if you agree with my choices.

1: Coco Chanel


Born Gabrielle“Coco” Bonheur Chanel, She created several iconic pieces, such as the ‘little black dress’ and the ‘Chanel Suit’. She blended a practical, modern and simple design to her work and is the only fashion designer to be named in the Time’s 100: The Most Important People of the Century

2: Christian Louboutin


He is the shoe designer of the modern age, there is no other designer who comes close to his fame in the shoe design world. His signature look is the red sole on the bottom of his shoes.

3: Christian Dior


Christian Dior became incredible popular after the Second World War after creating the ‘New Look’ dress. Which is still popular in today’s fashion world.

4: Yves Saint Laurent


Yves Saint Laurent redesigned women’s fashion with his own impression and twist on women’s suits. He made the ‘Power suit’ popular. He was one of the first couture designers to create and show ‘Ready-to-Wear’ collections.

5: Giorgio Armani


Giorgio Armani started his company in 1975 and is more known for his menswear design. He was the first designer to ban models with a Body Mass Index that is under 18, after the model Ana Carolina Reston starved herself to death due to an eating disorder

6: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana


These two designers met when they were designers for the same fashion house. They teamed up and started  a designer consulting studio which eventually became the ‘Dolce and Gabbana’ fashion house that we know and love today.

7: Guccio Gucci


His family owned a leather shop in his home town of Florence and after working in top hotels in London he has been said to of been inspired by the elegance of the places and started making bags for his families workshop.

8: Hubert de Givenchy


This designer was born into a french aristocratic family but his father died when Hubert was very young. His is very well known for designing most of Audrey Hepburn wardrobe throughout her career.

9: Calvin Klein


Calvin Klein is well known for his jean designs and his underwear as well. In addition to clothing, he also has given his name to a range of perfumes, watches, and jewelry.

10: Ralph Lauren


He is most famous for the ‘Polo shirt’ however the logo could be first seen on women’s suits designed in mens style by Ralph Lauren and only 2 years after that did he design his famous Polo shirt.

11: Donna Karen (DKNY)


DKNY stands for Donna Karan New York, She started of designing for other fashion houses. Karan became well known for her ‘Essentials’ line, initially offering seven easy pieces which could all be mixed and matched, and created a fully integrated wardrobe.

12: Donatella Versace


Donatello took over the Versace fashion line after the unfortunate event of the murder of her sister in 1997. However you can’t say that she has done badly with it lol.

13: Alexander McQueen


Before creating his own fashion label he worked for Givenchy as their chief designer. He died on the 11th February 2010. After his death Sarah Burton took over as creative director for the Alexander McQueen brand and famously designed Kate Middleton wedding dress.

14: Karl Lagerfeld


He has been head designer for big brands like Chloe, Fendi and he is head designer at the moment for Chanel.

15: Pierre Cardin


He started his carer in the 1950’s and his well known for his futuristic style which was inspired by the space race during the time and he hasn’t shopped designing this way. His designs always look like they a from the future.

16: Tom Ford

Tom Ford

He has been creative director for Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci. He has since created his own fashion line and has boomed ever since.

17: Roberto Cavalli


In 1979 he created his own way of printing onto leather which he also patented. He is well known for his bold prints and jeans.

18: Miuccia Prada


She is well known for her keeping her designs simple and traditional but with a modern twist to them. In the 1970’s she was member of the communist party and was an avid supporter of the Womens Rights Movement in Milan.

19: Jean Paul Gaultier


He was creative director for Hermes for a few years, Gaultier gets a lot of his inspiration from street wear and pop culture. He famously designed Madonna’s conned bra.

20: Jimmy Choo

Funnily enough his surname is actually is Chow but it was spelled wrong on his birth certificate. He is well known for designing amazing shoes. He is based in London.

And Ladies and Gentlemen that is my list of the top 20 designers of all time. I would like to point out again that his is my opinion but I would live to hear yours. If you feel like that I have missed somebody vital of the list of they are in the wrong order please let me know in the comments below.

  1. Would agree with you on 75% of this list. Personally feel that Valentino Garavani and Vivienne Westwood, have made significant creative contributions to fashion today. Hermes deserves to be honoured for the Kelly and Birkin designs. Finally, Roger Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo who set the precedence for the late 20th Century and onwards, I wonder if either Jimmy Choo or Louboutin would have been so passionately inspired.

    Honourable mention to the House of Guerlain should be mentioned, although not strictly a designer.

      • While I personal prefer Christian Dior’s designs, sadly his life and career was cut short, and he never had the lasting level of influence that Madamoiselle Chanel had. So I have to agree with you, Madamoiselle Chanel has unrivaled influence.
